These pictures were taken as Hurricane Sandy was pounding on the East Coast. Rescheduling was not an option, so we made sure everyone was safe. A big thanks goes to the management of The Varsity Apartments in Baltimore, MD, where this shoot took place.

Nikon D800 – Second Test with Sample Images (Studio Shoot)

This is the post for my second test with the D800 and while the first one was outdoors (see here), the second one was shot in studio using a grey background. I kept the lighting simple and non-distractive, a Profoto D1 1000 (click here) with a Mola Demi (click here) and of course my already dear Nikon D800 (click here) with the Nikon 85mm f/1.8G (click here). Since a few people have been complaining that it takes them a while to get the D800...

Nikon D800 – First Test with Sample Images

I just got my Nikon D800 (click here) and what a better way to test it than in a real life shoot. I was booked for a model portfolio and I decided to see what the D800 is capable of. I know it would be a step up, but instead of a step, it was a leap. The autofocus is extremely accurate and really fast. The only thing that bothers me a bit is that in very contrasty scenes (with the focus directly on the contrast),...

Mary Kay Photoshoot – LATISM Retreat in Washington D.C.

The other day I posted a behind the scenes pictures of a photoshoot I did in DC for Mary Kay. If you missed the post, see it here: Mary Kay Photoshoot – Behind the Scenes For this event, Mary Kay invited six of the world’s top Latina bloggers to attend a retreat in D.C. with a full make-over by celebrity make-up artist Luis Casco, celebrity stylist Angie Escamilla, and yours truly as the photographer. LATISM (Latinos in Social Media) is a pioneering organization of Latinos...

Picture Comparison: Nikon D800 vs Canon 5D Mark III

After the comparison of specs (click here to see it), it’s now time to look at the sample images both Canon and Nikon provide for the D800 and the 5D Mark III. In order to be fair, I picked pictures that were taken with equal lenses (24-70 f/2.8) and shot at ISO 100. I chose this picture from Canon: And this one from Nikon: At first I thought I might be unfair to Nikon, since the picture looked so dull in the preview, but...

Spec Comparison: Nikon D800 vs Canon 5D Mark III

Both the Nikon D800 and the Canon 5D Mark III have been long awaited. Last night, Canon finally announced the specs for the 5D Mark III, so here is the comparison just based on specs. Please note that these are pure numbers and don’t say anything about real life performance of either camera. Features Nikon D800 Canon 5D Mark III Resolution 36.3 MP 22.3 MP Sensor Type CMOS CMOS Sensor Size 35.9 x 24mm (FF) 36 x 24mm (FF) Image Size 7360 x 4912...

Upgrading your Camera – What you should know

All the time, people come up to me and ask which camera they should buy. Usually they try to choose between the latest and flashiest model they can afford, but mostly that’s the wrong question to ask, so I ask a counter question: “In what ways does your current camera limit you?” Barely anyone can give an answer to that simply because very few people will ever reach the limiting factors of their cameras. I still use 10 Megapixel cameras simply because I had...

The Microstock Challenge – Which sites make you money and which ones don’t

I have been doing a little bit of Microstock here and there for a few years but never really applied any analytics to it. Four months ago, I set out with the goal of tracking my progress and quadrupling my Microstock income purely by spending four hours a week in the first month, two hours a week in the second month, and one hour per week in the third and fourth month on it. My first four hours were spent on researching various Microstock...

Meet Author Ken Ballen

When Ken Ballen called me, he said that he needed a portrait for a book that he wrote on Terrorism. He told me a little about the background and I was glad that he invited me into his house to take the pictures, since that’s where he unwinds from dealing with terrorism and organized crime. The title of the book is Terrorists in Love and can be pre-ordered from Amazon (click here) (Launch Date: October 07, 2011). The book itself is an interesting read...

Meet Actress Jyna Maeng

This weekend I had the great pleasure to meet Jyna Maeng, who recently graduated from University of Virginia with a Bachelor in Drama. She has some experience with theater movement and comedy but I was amazed how quickly she was able to adapt to anything I asked of her. I like to ask people to do different things, so we have a wide range of emotions and looks to pick from and she nailed everything on the first try. After the shoot, Jyna and...

Grand Canyon – Let’s try something different

We have all seen pictures from the Grand Canyon and most of them look alike (though some are technically much better executed). There is not really that much choice at the Grand Canyon anyways unless you really start hiking down. So yeah, I took the same kinds of pictures that others do but tried to give them my own twist by playing with the background. I was hiking a little and the August sun was burning and it just kept getting hotter and my...

Canon 5D Mark III Prototype Specs and Release Date

For those of you waiting eagerly for the Canon 5D Mark III, you may have to wait a little longer than anticipated. Judging from several sources, there are currently three prototypes of the 5D Mark III out there that went to a few selected photographers. However, it seems like we will see a few new lenses and the 1Ds Mark IV before we see the updated 5D. Based on the prototypes, the 5D Mark III will have the following specifications: Sensor: 32 Megapixel Full...

From old make new…

While I was browsing through an old archive, I came across a picture from my very first ever attempt at fashion photography. I like the picture, and so I was wondering if I could do something completely different with it. I loaded the picture into Photoshop and decided that it is not going to look like the original, which is rather soft, but that I wanted a more edgy look with more pop to it. Here is the result: To see a larger version...

Craigslist: Everyone is trying to get photography for free

Today a friend linked me to a post on Craigslist, where an “award-winning restaurant” is looking to get photography done to grow their business. However, they are not willing to pay the photographer for several hours of work more than a meal and a cocktail. On top of that, they expect the photographer to produce work at the level of Toby Glanville or Eric Wolfinger, some of the top food photographers who easily command thousands of dollars for such an assignment. Here is the...

Another Stock Photo Mix-Up: Quebec Woman appears in ads for two opposing parties

I’ve said it before and I can not stop stressing that unless you are a small blogger or just want to illustrate something minor, it’s a pretty bad idea for you to choose a stock photo. What happened during the elections in Quebec was that both the Conservatives and the Bloc Quebecois decided not to hire a professional for their campaign ads but instead went the cheap route of just downloading cheap stock images. Too bad for both parties that they both decided to...

As some of you have probably already seen, Svenler Photography has a new logo design for our work. I’ve been brooding over a possible logo for weeks now and just could not figure anything out. How to shoot with Agency Models

When it comes to creating great pictures, one should have an awesome Photographer, a great Make-Up Artist, a wonderful Stylist and if possible an Agency Model. With their experience, look, and professionalism, agency models can enhance just about any picture, but how do you get to shoot with an agency model? While you can easily go out and hire a good Make-Up Artist and a Stylist, it’s a whole different story with agency models. If you are a photographer you either need a client...

Embarrassing: USPS and the Microstock Mix-Up

While Microstock sites such as iStockphoto or Dreamstime are a great way for small bloggers to procure their images, companies should think twice before trying to save a few bucks by downloading an image from a Microstock site. There have been numerous cases where two companies in the same market have used the same stock photographs to advertise two different things or even the same things, and ultimately it’s just embarrassing for any company. The biggest one on the list that I have seen...

Freelance Modeling: The Chaperone Question

Escort: an attendant who is employed to accompany someone (Princeton Worldnet) Chaperone: one who accompanies and supervises a young woman or gatherings of young people (Princeton Worldnet) The Chaperone Question (or Escort Question) tends to come up once in a while with freelance models, especially if they do not have much experience. Now if this is a paid shoot, whoever pays makes the rules. However, if it’s a test shoot (or a trade shoot) or your client gives you full control, there are exactly...
