Two weeks ago I did a shoot of Beth Newburger Schwartz and Michele Berman for the 2010 Balls & Galas issue of Washington Life Magazine at the Park Hyatt in Washington D.C. Make-up was provided by Carl Ray, who is an amazing make up artist.
The space we were to shoot in was very limited with only 7 ft. ceilings, but we were still able to pull off something that the editor loved. Due to the limited amount of space, we decided to go with a three light setup and use the white wall to camera left as a fill. We used a Westcott Spiderlite TD5 with an Umbrella as the main light, another TD5 with a Medium Softbox as the combined kicker and hair light, and a TD3 as the background light to give some depth to the scene. If you are looking to buy a kit like this, check out Adorama. If you buy one of those kits, you will pretty much be able to take great portraits in any situation; I have used them for years.
Below you will see a graphic with the lighting setup I used and a picture of the actual page in the magazine:

If you like this post, you can help me keep writing stuff like this by buying your camera equipment using my promotional links for Amazon, Adorama, and B&H Photo. I have been using these stores for years for their great customer service, quality, and low prices. Using these links does not cost you anything, but it helps me cover some of the costs associated with running a website and taking time out of my day to write.

Bravo! Nice job on this photo shoot for us. I particularly enjoyed the technical write up.
